Mad Ox Bakery is closing its retail space, transitioning to a home bakery and accepting orders in advance beginning July 1.
Owners Karris and Mathew Mattox said they are building an addition to the back of their home and they will have a “mini bakery” instead.
“We’re not closing, but you won’t be able to pop in anymore,” Karris Mattox said. “We will make the same items — we just need to know beforehand.”
June 29 is the last day for walk-in business.
The couple will focus on special orders, catering and specialty cakes from their home bakery. Cookies, breads, bars and everything, besides the lunch, will be available for pre-order, Karris said.
“We are unable to do lunch because of how it works for a home bakery license, but everything else is the same,” she said.
The bakery has been open for more than five years, but Karris said it became clear that it “wasn’t a sustainable lifestyle” and they needed to make a change.
Not having the retail space is the hardest part of the change, she said.
“We love what we do and we love our customers, but we really value each other, our family and we want to make sure we are taking care of ourselves,” Karris said.
“To some people it’s sad, but I hope they will still consider us when they want baked goods, we hope they still give us a call,” Karris said.
