Review: ‘Whorehouse’ a fun musical in Bellevue

“The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” opened last Friday night at the Bellevue Little Theatre for a three-weekend run. This is an adult musical that is full of fun and memorable songs.

I still have the songs running through my mind several days later. That is what I call a successful musical – when you leave the theater with the songs still in your thoughts.

Director D. Laureen Pickle has a hit on her hands with this musical about “The Chicken Ranch” in Texas. This musical is loosely based on a true story.

Chris Ebke does quadruple duty in this show. He is musical director, the Rio Grande band conductor and narrator, and he was in charge of building the set. He does a good job on all four.

The lady in charge of the house of ill repute is Miss Mona, played by Sarah Ebke. She is very good and has some wonderful songs. She is joined by the girls in these songs which include: “20 Fans,” “A Lil’ Ole Bitty Piss Ant Country Place,” “Girl You’re a Woman” and, my favorite song in the whole show, “Hard Candy Christmas.”

Mona’s best male friend is the sheriff, played well by Don Harris.

Another good song sung by the waitress, played by Kate Simmons, is “Doatsey Mae.”

As with all good musicals about Texas, there is some yee haw dancing in this show. Choreographer Keri Jo Richardson has put the fun dance numbers together. The numbers fit the story well. The cast has 32 actors with some big production numbers.

Melvin P. Thorpe is the crusading TV evangelist who wants to close down the ranch. He is played by Jim Farmer with great enthusiasm. His song, “Texas Has a Whorehouse in It,” is great, and his hairdo is incredible. The Governor, played by Steve Ebke, has a number called “The Sidestep,” which fits today’s politicians as well. Miss Mona’s assistant, Jewel, has a lovely song called “Twenty-Four Hours of Lovin’,” which is lots of fun. This show has everything you could possibly want in a ’70s musical about a rural Texas whorehouse. There are Aggie football players, cheerleaders and good ole country boys and girls – all in 2 hours and 15 minutes of non-stop entertainment.

This show is sexy musical that shows a lot of feeling between Miss Mona and her girls. As the girls and Mona say when customers leave the ranch: “Y’all come back, now.”

Take the trip to Bellevue, Nebraska, to see this great production.

“The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” runs two more weekends with curtain times at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays. Ticket prices are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors and $10 for students 16 and older. The box office can be reached Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at (402) 291-1554. Just cross the toll bridge from Iowa into Nebraska and keep straight on Mission to find the theater.
