Monkeypox belongs to the same family of viruses as smallpox but is less transmissible and milder. Monkeypox was first found in laboratory monkeys in the late 1950s. What Are The Symptoms Of Monkeypox? Monkeypox begins with fever, headache, muscle aches, exhaustion and chills. Unlike smallpox, monkeypox causes lymph nodes to swell. The illness typically lasts 2-4 weeks. Lesions progress through several stages before falling off, • Macules • Papules • Vesicles • Pustules • Scabs How Serious Is Monkeypox? Outbreaks of monkeypox have typically been small, with patients in the single digits. However, in Africa, monkeypox has been shown to cause death in as many as 1 in 10 persons who contract the disease.
