State and local leaders gathered Tuesday morning to celebrate the groundbreaking of Spin Lofts, an innovative affordable housing development that will transform a long-vacant property into 45 affordable apartments in Council Bluffs.
Led by Arch Icon Development in partnership with Lutheran Family Services, Spin Lofts was named the winner of the Iowa Finance Authority's Innovation in Housing Pitch Competition last year, providing the development with an award of federal housing tax credits. The competition recognizes developments that use innovative partnerships, financing and operations to address Iowa's housing needs.
Iowa Finance Authority Director Debi Durham joined Mayor Jill Shudak, Arch Icon Development Co-Founder Darin Smith, Lutheran Family Services President and CEO Chris Tonniges and community partners to mark the beginning of construction.
"Spin Lofts reflects the kind of innovation and partnership Iowa needs to create housing that meets our greatest needs," said Iowa Finance Authority Director Debi Durham. "We're proud to support a project that will have a meaningful impact in Council Bluffs."
Spin Lofts is being developed by Arch Icon Development and will be operated by Lutheran Family Services. The development will provide more than 45 affordable apartments, including housing for individuals and families experiencing homelessness, while offering residents access to supportive services.
The City of Council Bluffs partnered with Arch Icon Development, Lutheran Family Services, Iowa West Foundation, Front Porch Investments and numerous other organizations to help move the project from concept to construction.
